Overview

Known as the “Whiskey Route”, the Machame Route is one of the most popular and scenic trails on Mount Kilimanjaro. This 7-day trek offers stunning landscapes, including rainforest, moorlands, alpine desert, and glaciers, as well as excellent acclimatization with the “climb high, sleep low” approach. Trekkers will pass iconic points such as Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, and Barranco Wall before summiting at Uhuru Peak (5895m). With a good balance of challenge, scenery, and high success rates, Machame is a favorite for adventurous hikers.

Note: Tips for mountain staff are highly appreciated.

Itinerary

After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate for registration and trekking formalities. Begin the trek through lush rainforest trails, possibly spotting wildlife along the way, before reaching Machame Camp (2980m) for dinner and overnight stay.

Following breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and ascend into moorland, passing giant heather and volcanic rock formations. Arrive at Shira Camp (3840m) on the Shira Plateau for dinner and overnight stay.

Today is an important acclimatization day. Trek upward to the Lava Tower (4600m), stopping for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp (3960m) for dinner and overnight stay, following the “climb high, sleep low” principle.

After breakfast, climb the famous Barranco Wall, enjoying panoramic views of glaciers and valleys below. Trek through alpine desert landscapes before arriving at Karanga Camp (4035m) for dinner and overnight stay.

Depart Karanga after breakfast and trek steadily upward toward Barafu Camp (4640m), the base for the summit attempt. Arrive in the afternoon, rest, and enjoy an early dinner before preparing for the midnight summit climb.

At midnight, begin the challenging ascent to Uhuru Peak (5895m), trekking through steep switchbacks in icy conditions. Reach the summit in time for sunrise and breathtaking views from the highest point in Africa. Descend back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3080m) for dinner and overnight stay.

After breakfast, descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate for check-out and certificates of achievement. Meet your vehicle transfer back to Arusha or Moshi, marking the end of your Machame Route trek.
