Ol Donyo Lengai

Overview

Mt. Oldonyo Lengai is the “Mountain of God” for the Maasai. On its top the God of  the tribe has its Home. Ol Donyo Lengai is unique among active volcanoes in that it produces natrocarbonatite lava, a unique occurrence of volcanic carbonatite. A few older extinct carbonatite volcanoes are located. The volcano continues to be active, and produce natrocarbonatite lava that slowly fills up the crater.

A small cone of natrocarbonatite lava is forming on the western side of Lengai’s crater, which formed in 2008 during a series of violent explosions that destroyed the former bizarre crater terrace filling the north crater, famous for the bizarre “hornitos” of white and gray lava.
